Owner of CrossFit Plano

Dear Friend:

Do you look at other lean and fit people and wonder how you can get the fabulous body they have?

Have you avoided working out because you’re afraid of getting injured or making an injury you have worse?

Are you worried about your health and developing chronic disease that will affect your quality of life?

CrossFit at CrossFit Plano will transform the way you look at health and fitness and give you that rock hard, conditioned body you’ve always wanted.

My name is Troy Dodson and I’m the owner of CrossFit Plano, founded in 2005 as the first CrossFit style training facility located in all of the DFW metroplex.

Don’t know what CrossFit is? You’re not alone. I didn’t know that CrossFit even existed until I was in Baghdad in 2004 and saw 2 military contractors doing the Workout of the Day. It wasn’t very well known then, but it was clear to me CrossFit was on the cutting edge of fitness and I wanted to learn everything I could about it.

But let me get back to that. I want to tell you how I really got started doing CrossFit. It wasn’t easy. But nothing that is worth it ever is. You see, even though I have a strong athletic background and was a martial arts instructor for over 8 years, I’d been dealing with a knee injury that ended my career and the activity that had kept me fit for many years.

After 3 years of inactivity due to major knee surgery, working double shifts, traveling constantly and eating all the wrong foods at too many restaurants along the way, I looked at my self in the mirror and saw that I’d packed on 40 pounds and had 25% body fat. I was so miserable about myself that I hit rock bottom.

Believe me when I tell you that if I hadn’t felt that incredible low, I never would have sought out something that would change the way I viewed my body, fitness and health. Around that time I was in Baghdad and that is when I found CrossFit. CrossFit literally changed my life for the better!

How I went from 25% Body Fat and Always in a State of Fatigue to Just 8% Body Fat and Energy for Days!

When I started my CrossFit journey, I was in China, oddly enough, and I worked my butt off for 8 full months. During that time I went from 185 lbs. to 155 lbs. and reduced my body fat to 8%. Now when I look in the mirror, I see a lean and fit body, not the flabby and unhealthy body that had gotten me so down.

But more than that, I feel healthier than I ever have in my life!

I’m not going to say that getting there was easy. It took consistent work at the CrossFit program for 8 full months. During that time my body adapted to the CrossFit program and responded to the demands I was making on my body during training.

And because I was in China, there was no experienced CrossFit Coach nearby to help me through the process. If it weren’t for my extensive background in athletic training I most likely would not have had the results I did on my own. But taking a comprehensive approach really worked for me.

I focused my energy in the areas that had gotten me in trouble in the first place and had held me back from recovering from my injury. Once I did I began to feel overall good health and balance. I was amazed by what I was able to accomplish.

What are you looking to get out of a fitness and weight loss program?

Most people who come to me have tried some form of fitness program in the past. They may have lost weight and toned their body a little. But it didn’t last.

Let’s put this right out on the table. Anyone can lose weight and build a little muscle tone. But unless you use a whole body approach to fitness, health and nutrition, you’re doomed to go right back to where you started. What’s the use of putting out all that effort if you won’t get lasting, life long results?

CrossFit Plano gives you a complete fitness makeover that will help you turn your current bad habits into healthy lifestyle changes that will keep you feeling fit, young, strong, full of endurance and feeling healthy!

You’ll have more confidence, be stronger and feel less stress.

But Don’t Take My Word For It, Check Out What Others Have to Say:

My name is David Knapschaefer and I joined CrossFit Plano about a year ago. I joined because I wanted to train to climb Mt. Rainier in Washington State. And for six months I got in the best shape of my life and then I got married and “tied up” my finances and had to leave for a little while but now I am back!

I live in Downtown Dallas and it takes me 45 minutes to get here, but I told my wife that I wasn’t going to go anywhere else besides CrossFit Plano because Troy and his staff are absolutely the best and nobody else can compare!”

It has been six days since I started at CrossFit Plano and I have already lost 4.5 pounds and I am finally below 130 pounds, which I have been trying to get to for a few years now. I actually feel better about myself, I am eating right, and I am having a good time and really like the program!

As an Army Officer, I come to CrossFit Plano whenever I am in town because Troy and his entire Staff have a true understanding of fitness. They treat fitness as a total body endeavor. Prior to starting, I looked at fitness as only how much weight I could move and how fast I could move it.

I was also almost completely unaware of the damage I had done to my body. Troy and the team were able to teach how each movement recruits your muscles, skeletal structure, and nervous system. He showed me where my technique and form was flawed and taught me drills to improve. His training always focuses on fixing each aspect of the movement, rather than just telling me to stretch more or just allowing subtle technique flaws to go on unnoticed. Troy is able to spot flaws, show how the body is compensating, and explain how they can be fixed. They were also not afraid to tell me to scale back down to correct my form. While frustrating at first, I am confident it has saved me from injuries in the long run.

I am confident that the training I received from CrossFit Plano has helped me through some of the U.S. Army's most demanding courses, including Ranger school. I now take aspects of what I have learned from CrossFit Plano and implement it into my soldiers training to help them improve and reduce injuries.

I started just six days ago and with the workouts and the diet modifications I have already made, I have lost a few pounds. One of the things Troy has helped me with was modifying my diet. He had me switch from eating 6 times per day to just 3 times per day and I have really noticed that I am not nearly as hungry as I normally am, and with less food cravings this has made it easier to lose weight. I am really enjoying the program!

I just got back from Mexico. I was out there for a mission trip, we were building churches for some natives out in the Chiapas near Guatemala, We had an amazing time! We were working hard – we were mixing concrete by hand, and thank goodness I had about 2 and a half months of preparation with CrossFit Plano before I left because otherwise I would have died!

We were carrying 50kg of concrete in each hand, back and forth all day, and it just reminded me of all the wonderful “Farmer’s Carry’s” I have done here at CrossFit Plano. So I just want to “Thank You” personally, Troy, for helping me out! :)

In fact, the people there had never met any foreigners before! They are descendants of the Mayan Indians and apparently some of them had been doing some CrossFit, because they were really “busting it”! :)

I didn't begin CrossFit Plano looking to lose weight or inches. I went in looking for a mental and physical challenge. Boy, did I find it... and then some! CrossFit Plano has transformed me completely. It is the passion I have been missing in my life for so long. I love my husband and kids, but I needed this for me. I have more self-confidence. I sleep better. My mood is better. I have more energy. I could go on and on about the way CrossFit has improved my life. And in less than 2 months... amazing!

The people at CrossFit Plano truly make the experience. Troy Dodson, owner and lead trainer, cares for his gym members and community. He has given me a lot of personal instruction and has worked with me to help me get past my confidence issues. He recently gave every member a copy of a book that helped him reach the success he has reached. Troy hosted a fundraiser in May to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and is hosting an ongoing fundraiser this month to benefit Minnie's Food Pantry. The members at CrossFit Plano are the most supportive, encouraging group of people I've ever worked out with. I feel that one can only succeed in this awesome environment.

Yes, the workouts are hard. Really hard and A LOT of fun! The payoffs are well worth the effort. Anyone can do it. If you check out the website you will see pictures of people of all shapes and sizes working hard to reach their goals.

I can't wait to see where the next year takes me!

I started 6 days ago at CrossFit Plano, and I was previously eating the Paleo Diet and wanted to change and in six days I’ve actually lost six pounds already, I am pretty sore from the workouts, but other than that, it has been great! I feel better, I have more energy, I think my eyesight might even be a little better, but I am not really sure about that, my energy levels are much better and my food intake is very good. I am really happy with the program!

I started with CrossFit Plano a week ago and have found the results phenomenal. I have worked out 4 days this week so far and I know I used to fit into my size 2s but they were a little snug. But now I am feeling like they are a little looser than they should be. I just feel like I’ve toned up a lot in my arms, and in my abs and glutes.

Plus, I’ve been following Troy’s nutrition program and I have noticed I do feel a lot cleaner…like some toxins have been “flushed” out. And I’m feeling like I have a lot more mental clarity. I used to hit a slump at about 3pm in the afternoon, but I am finding that in the last few days that hasn’t been happening. Also, the ingredients in the meal plans are easy to find, and it’s very easy to stick with the recommendations Troy has made for me. All of the foods are good and tasty, so it’s much easier to stick with. I’ve really been enjoying it and I look forward to continuing!

I have been a paratrooper for the past 7 years and life in the Army is very physical. They don’t really train you how to maintain yourself. It’s just “execute and go”. So I pretty much abused and tortured my body for the past 7 years doing anything you can imagine from jumping out of airplanes to doing 45 mile road marches with 100 pound backpacks with practically no sleep for three weeks at a time.

Right before I began recruiting duty, I jumped out of an airplane and had a failed parachute and “burned in” (Army-speak for coming in fast and hard). I pulled pretty much all of the muscles out of my rib cage and down through my right hip and they just gave me some Motrin and told me to get back to work. And that is what I did. My body adapted to that although I had a lot of muscle atrophy, and some scar tissue and movement compensation I developed from it.

When I came out here on recruiting duty, CrossFit Plano was the closest affiliate to Sherman, TX where my duty station is located so this is where I began CrossFit.

They let me “torture” myself for about a month and then they offered me a “hand” if I wanted it and I started to learn more about some of the other things they teach and that’s how I got started and really involved here a little over a year ago.

Now, after a year at CrossFit Plano, my compensations are going away although we still do some scar tissue “therapy” and exercises to get me moving better. Through this process I was very, very strong before, but also very immobile. Over the past year, I have maintained the same strength and become very mobile, but without any pain. So I was able to “fix” myself, without taking any time off, I still exercised, but now I am pain free and ready to train even harder.

What I like about CrossFit is that you can really push yourself to your limits. That hurt me before because my body was already broken and as I’ve worked with Troy he has kind of helped me “take the brakes off” so I can go faster. So I can do a lot of the same stuff but harder and faster, but without causing my body to break down because it can now handle it. I am now training smarter, which I have never done before, because it was always “GO…GO…GO…till you break”.

They do actually coach here. I’ve been to six CrossFit affiliates around the country as I have been travelling quite a bit recently, and this is the only CrossFit that will actually teach you and not just put weight on the bar and tell you to go. So that helps me a lot because as I said in the Army they will just teach us to “Run and Go” and instruction in the exercises isn’t really there. I have really gotten a great education at CrossFit Plano since I’ve been here.

What keeps me coming back is they teach me how to assess and reassess myself and I keep making progress. My latest project relates to food. I guess I burn a lot of calories each day naturally and because of my activity – I have to intake 4500 calories daily just to maintain who I am. I had to increase my food intake recently to make sure I was getting enough calories and found out the hard way that the foods many of us eat on a regular basis are not all that healthy for us. As I increased my calories, I got really sick and put on 26 pounds in just two weeks. And I couldn’t even work out anymore.

Troy helped me get tested for Food Sensitivities and I found out that I was reacting abnormally to some foods I was eating every day. So I am now on an elimination and reeducation diet and it feels very good. It’s pretty much helped me feel like a kid again – you know where you just have tons of energy and you can just do things and focus really well.

As an adult we have all these other stressors. It has really taken all that stress away and made everything much more manageable. For example, I held so much tension in my gut that I couldn’t function. Everything in my stomach now is very relaxed. And I can go about my daily life where I play and just have fun with things. I have probably made more progress in the past three weeks because of this process then I have in the past six months! It’s been really fun for me to see these kinds of results! Thank you CrossFit Plano for everything you have done!

I started with CrossFit Plano about 15 months ago, and I was about 240ish pounds and now I have gotten down as low as 199, but typically hover between 200-204 on a daily basis. I also had high blood pressure – I was 140+/90 and now I am down to 110/78 so my experience at CrossFit Plano has been absolutely life changing. It’s been a great experience, I like it and I have a lot of fun here, and I keep coming back for more.

A friend at work told me about CrossFit Plano. I had mentioned to him “I wish there was a gym where you could get instruction, and group exercise” and my friend said that’s CrossFit and I had no idea what he was talking about. So he told me all about it and I researched it and came and joined up a couple of months ago.

It was exactly what I was looking for. I was in the Army, many, many years ago and I wanted the “PT” style exercise where you workout in a group, and there is an instructor leading the group and they are making sure you are doing it right and telling you what to do and you just feed off each other’s energy – you are not in a gym all by yourself, doing it all on your own. Once again, it’s instructor-led, but peer-driven. Everyday I come in and they tell me what to do and I do it, shower and go back to work. So it’s not up to me to figure out that today I am going to do “arms” and tomorrow “legs”, instead, they’ve got it all mapped out for me.

My goal is to achieve overall fitness and of course, I would also want to tone up, and have better health. I really just want to look and feel better and have more energy. I’ve made really good progress in just a couple of months, and when I heard about CrossFit Plano I thought to myself “That’s the next step!”

I’ve had a chance to work with most of the instructors here and they always give tons of personal attention. They are all great and they give a lot of individual attention even though there might be 6, 7 or 10 people working out together in a class, they’ll still keep an eye on each one. They are watching even when you don’t think they are watching, and all of a sudden they’ll say something to you because they’ve been watching you. The quality of instruction is superb. I am absolutely impressed with all of the instructors.

I joined CrossFit Plano 2 months ago, and I just want to say that CrossFit has been the best workout I’ve ever had. Before I came here I was doing the traditional treadmill and weightlifting workouts at a health club. Since I joined CrossFit Plano I have been getting a better all-around workout and the community here has been very supportive and I really appreciate all the advice and help I get and everybody from beginners to advanced professionals have been welcomed here. I have really enjoyed workout out here and I plan to stay as long as I can!

Years of mainstream gyms, aerobics classes, kickboxing and entire collections of workout DVDs that I could recite word for word bored the hell out of me. Almost 5 years of indoor soccer was really fun, but earned me an ambulance ride to the emergency room and a large collection of medical braces and bruises. Only one year of Crossfit, plus a gradual change in eating habits, and an introduction to dynamic mobility has done what years of traditional exercise and dieting failed to do. I feel better, look better and have made a permanent change in my life that I can live with. No more yo-yo diets and gaining another 10 pounds while my sprained ankle heals. No more feeling deprived or guilty for eating (and, very important to me as a beer connoisseur, drinking) the things I enjoy. No more dreading the boredom of the same old workout. I believe this is what they call a life-changing experience.

Besides the touchy-feely stuff above, here are the facts. I have lost 30 pounds over the last year, which translates into a total loss of about 14 inches measured over 8 points along my arms, legs and torso. A year ago I couldn’t do a single regular push-up and now I can do 15+ in a row. A year ago I couldn’t do a single pull-up and now I can do 3+ kipping pull-ups in a row without an assisting band. I didn’t even know what a deadlift was a year ago and I hit my PR (personal record) on the deadlift of 200 pounds last month. I can back squat and front squat my body weight. I’ve almost mastered the intricacies of the snatch and in the last year I have done more handstands, cartwheels and tumbling than I have since 5th grade. Being out of your element, out of your comfort zone, isn’t a bad thing, really and you never know when life will surprise you and that will come in handy. Crossfit isn’t about mastering a single lift or exercise; it is about being competent and efficient across a wide range of physical skills. From the main Crossfit site: "[Crossfit] delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.” This is Crossfit. And I love it. And this is something I can do for the rest of my life!

"Only one year of Crossfit has done what years of traditional exercise and dieting failed to do"

If you’re wondering just what CrossFit is then you’re not alone. CrossFit is cutting edge fitness. It started out as a maverick gym in Santa Cruz. But because of the nature of training and the extraordinary results people are able to achieve when doing CrossFit, it has now spread worldwide!

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for police academies and tactical operation teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists and hundreds of professional athletes worldwide.

If CrossFit didn’t get the results these elite groups were looking for, they wouldn’t endorse it and use it for their training.

You won’t be able to find another facility in the DWF metroplex that offers what CrossFit Plano does. Working with our expert CrossFit trainers you’re absolutely guaranteed to get results!

At CrossFit Plano, we invest in only the best. Every coach who trains with us is highly educated and has expert skills to deliver a superior CrossFit workout experience to each and every client.

We have the experience to offer specialized coaching to athletes who need to overcome restrictions and performance obstacles in order to achieve their optimal performance.

Here’s why CrossFit Plano is different than any other program out there

  • Small group training where you become part of a community of people who want to improve overall health
  • Get an individualized program with a trainer who will lead you through the movements that are meant to help you in your every day life in the real world and making sure you are doing each exercise correctly
  • Feel a complete fitness and health turnaround while doing fun, energetic and strength building exercises that change every day so you won’t get bored
  • Focus on what it takes to build strength, condition your body to optimal performance, get pain free mobility and learn optimal nutritional practices to improve overall health
  • Get leaner, feel more confident, more energetic and have less stress
  • See a dramatic physical and mental change in yourself

Our facility is definitely one of a kind, and unlike a lot of Crossfit facilities. While there’s nothing wrong with the “garage gym” –hey that’s how we got started in 2005 too, but it’s just not our style anymore. And it doesn’t have to be yours, either. Check out some things that make us different:

  • Convenient class times are GOOD. We have them! We have CrossFit classes every hour on the hour throughout the week!
  • Air conditioning is GOOD. We have it!
  • Taking a shower after your workout is GOOD. We have those too! We have 8 showers split between Ladies and Men’s rooms.
  • Cleanliness is Verrryyy GOOD. (NEED I SAY MORE?)
  • Nice bathrooms are GOOD. We have nice, clean bathrooms! 2 of them, in fact, so there’s absolutely no wait!
  • A convenient location is GOOD. We have that! Located at the North West corner of Park and Coit in Plano, we are convenient to George Bush (190), 75 and the Tollway!

Fitness is and should be about “super-wellness.” It’s not enough to just lose weight. In fact, anyone can lose weight or workout with weights. But that is not what CrossFit is about!

Any fitness regimen that does not support health and well-being is not a CrossFit program!

I can’t stress this enough. What makes CrossFit so unique is that you’re not only going to lose weight and get your body in shape, you’ll be enjoying overall good health and well-being that will last you a lifetime!

What’s your health and well-being worth to you?

Do you have a difficult time sticking to a fitness program?

We make our program fun! You’ll not only learn exactly what you need to do to stay healthy for life, but you’ll be a part of a community of people who will share your same goal. We make you accountable for your progress and push you. But the end result is worth it!

Are you one of those people who make excuses about why you can’t workout?

That’s just laziness and excuses. Even a person with an injury can work out and keep their body healthy and in shape. You just need to know how.

I challenge you to let go of those tired excuses that are holding you back as I did. I’m living proof CrossFit can work. You’ll have all the support you need to make positive changes in your life so you can build strength and endurance, feel healthy and strong, and be lean and fit!
